HRH The Countess of Wessex visits Martha Trust

The Trustees of the Martha Trust in Hereford were delighted to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO for a visit at Sophie House on Tuesday 13th October 2015.

Her Royal Highness came to gain an understanding of the work carried out by the Martha Trust Charity. The visit lasted for an hour, during which time the Countess had an opportunity to speak to the Trustees, parents and staff and of course to meet our residents.    The time seemed to go so fast but the Countess’s obvious background knowledge helped us to cover many aspects of the work we do.

Sarah and Richard were particularly charmed with the interaction between the Countess and their daughter Sophie when she presented HRH with the posy of flowers from the garden.

The visit came at an auspicious time for the Charity when Sophie House had just celebrated its’ third year of operation, and Martha Trust is approaching its’ twentieth year in Hereford.  The Charity has a total of twenty eight beds in two purpose built nursing homes offering both lifelong and respite care. Residents receive a variety of therapies and activities encouraging and enabling them to develop to their own individual full potential.   For everyone involved in the charity the day was the realisation of twenty years work spent building our two homes and providing excellent care and support for all our residents and their families. It was a very special day for all our guests

The charity was founded by Richard and Sarah Smith following the birth of their daughter Sophie who will be 27 years old this October.  Richard and Sarah hope to inspire other people to create similar facilities across the country to help more families with profoundly disabled children requiring very specialised and detailed one to one care.
